This edition of QVED (Quo Vadis Editorial Design), which is becoming the most important editorial design conference in Europe, had an impressive line-up. First of the speakers to open fire was dutch designer Jaap Biemans, aka Coverjunkie. His website is one of the most visited sources of inspiration, and he took the opportunity to show some of his favourite covers and some of his personal work. You can watch Jaap’s talk (in English) here.
Steve Watson from Stack explained how this new way of distribution can help the golden age of independent magazines. You can watch his talk in English here.
Czech designer Filip Blazek talked about its experience doing TYPO magazine. Was interesting to hear not only about the success stories of the publication, but also about the always difficult balance between leading a magazine through passion and making it a viable business case.
Another highlight in the first day of the event was the illustration session. We had the chance to see a good array of different styles. Perhaps the most interesting was Jörg Dommel, not only for his style (digital clean line) but for his quirky sense of humour. His portfolio can be found here.
